CYRUS CDi-XR CD Player

The CDi XR was designed as a reference integrated CD player, building upon the legacy of the multi-award-winning CDi. Housed within an iconic half-width chassis, the CDi-XR sits above the existing CDi and CDt models, offering a substantive performance upgrade.

The Cyrus philosophy for reading CDs has always been the same – read it once and read it accurately. The latest iteration of Cyrus SE technology in the CDi-XR does exactly this, streaming the data from the disc to the audio processing circuitry with precision and accuracy.

The CDi-XR DAC design includes the highest specified Sabre DAC. This, partnered with a high-speed analogue stage with excellent dynamic range delivers exceptional noise and THD performance from the DAC stage.

Within a CD player is a complex mix of signals including fast digital audio, sensitive analogue audio, high current servo and system control. To minimise interaction between these circuit stages the power supply design of the CDi-XR is completely segmented. The digital control circuits run from a dedicated, high-efficiency supply, with other parts of the player powered from an over-specified linear power supply with a toroidal transformer. Nine individual stage regulators smooth and distribute power within the player according to demand.

The CDi-XR features the familiar half-width casing that the brand has been using for decades, which provides a solid and low-resonance foundation for electronics.

It retains the brand's slot-loading transport mechanism, known for its ability to extract data efficiently, reducing reading errors.

The CDi-XR introduces the second-generation 32-bit QXR DAC platform, which is claimed to offer significant technical and sonic improvements over the previous edition.

The power supply arrangement has been improved to make the feed stiffer and quieter.

The CD player includes multiple outputs, including twin (RCA) analogue, optical, and coaxial outputs.

New touch controls have been added, although they are noted as inconsistent in response compared to the fully featured remote control.

There's an option for an outboard power supply unit, the PSU-XR, which is considered a good upgrade.

The CDi-XR delivers more detail, stronger dynamics, and a more powerful bass performance.

It offers precise rendering of sounds, particularly in the low frequencies, where it produces more authority and weight.

Voices are well-projected, and the player maintains an analytical presentation with musical cohesion and dynamic finesse.

The CDi-XR excels in rhythmic drive and can communicate the energy and momentum of the music effectively.

Instruments are portrayed with convincing textures and nuance, even in demanding musical passages.

The CDi-XR performs well with larger-scale dynamic shifts and is considered a top performer in its price range for CD-playing sound quality.

The CDi-XR includes a port for the new PSU-XR power supply upgrade. Thirty years ago Cyrus broke new ground with the introduction of the PSX-R, the first-ever regulated power supply upgrade that automatically adapted to match perfectly the power requirements of any connected product. The PSU-XR raises the bar by sourcing no less than five independent regulated supplies in a single box. For the CDi-XR four of the PSU-XR power supplies are employed. One pair to provide ultra-smooth power for the analogue audio circuitry, one for the current-hungry demands of the motors and one just to provide an ultra-stable supply for the PLL digital master clock circuit, reducing any power supply-related jitter to a minimum.

A new menu system makes the CDi-XR customisable yet easy to set up. The tree-style navigation structure has display, time-out, and system configuration options. Menu settings are quick and simple to select.

Verdict:

The CDi-XR is an impressive performance, delivering excellent sound quality.

It is recommended for those seeking a high-quality CD player in its price range.

Overall, the Cyrus CDi-XR is highlighted for its sonic capabilities and improvements over its predecessor, making it a compelling choice for audiophiles looking for top-tier CD playback.
